It's
that time of year again, and if you haven't
yet filed, rest assured that you are definitely
not alone! We asked Angela Garrett from
our friends at Suncoast
Tax & Accounting, Inc. to share
some tips. Extensions are always an option,
but be sure you understand exactly what
one entails.
___
"You
can request an automatic extension to
file, but not to pay," says Garrett. "If
you anticipate owing tax, an estimated
check should accompany the extension
request."
___
It's
worth noting that an amended return is
not a invitation for an audit, despite
what people may think.
___
Starting
a home based business can be exciting,
but stressful -especially this time of
year. How well you get through tax season
may just coincide with your understanding
of what you can claim. Take a hard look
around your office for instance, you may
be surprised what your tax preparer can
help you claim. For many people, one of
their biggest business expenses sits right
in their garage.
___
"Some
often overlooked business expenses are
mileage and home office expenses.
The mileage rate for 2004 is 37.5 cents
per mile, plus auto loan interest,
tolls and parking," she added. Keeping
track of your auto expenses is a must.
Imagine a business owner who legitimately
uses their vehicle for their day to day
operation. A little over 50 miles of travel
a day, every work day, could add up to
a $5,000 mileage deduction.
___
Your
home office size can be just as important
as what you put in it, according to Garrett.
Also think about what it takes to keep
your office and home operational.
___
"Home
office expenses are based on the square
footage ratio of the room vs the
total home square footage. Home office
expenses include a percentage of property
tax, mortgage interest, house insurance,
utilities, maintenance and repair, etc."
___
Like
amended tax returns, know that claiming
home office expenses will not trigger
an audit.
___
Expenses
for a self-employed person are very important,
as they not only lower the business profit
thus lowering the income tax, they also
lower the exposure to social security
tax. This "self-employment tax"
is 15.3% of the business profit.
