| The greatest medicine, it has been said, is laughter.
On Wednesday, September 28th, from 8pm to 10pm, the Tampa Improv Comedy Theater and Restaurant in Ybor City will showcase eight comedians for a night of entertainment and reaching out. All proceeds, as well as two dollars from all ticket sales for the week, will go to the American Red Cross in an effort to help people that Katrina left in dire need. Donations will also be accepted at the door in the form of supplies. Baby food, canned goods and so much more basic family provisions are needed.
One of the night's headliners the event will be New Orleans native John Morgan. Having performed on Showtime, HBO, Comedy Central and MTV, John "The Rajin Cajun" will surely deliver a seasoned performance, and one that hits close to home. Last year a hurricane destroyed his house on the Gulf Coast. But he's living proof that the show must go on. John will also appear at the Improv through October 2nd.
The organizer of the event is veteran comedian Thomas Brown. A local favorite, Thomas is drawn to lending a helping hand using his talent. He and several local comedians established "Laughs for Food" several years ago, where percentages of door money and comedy book sales went to families in need.
The Tampa Improv itself is no stranger to contributing to the greater good. This past December they successfully hosted "Holiday Hysterics" to benefit the Salvation Army.
"It puts my problems, and all of our problems, in perspective," Thomas Brown said of the hundreds of thousands affected by Hurricane Katrina. "These people have nothing; they'd do anything to have the kind of problems I have."
It's the children who may need the most help through this ordeal. Many families just do not have the resources anymore to provide their basic needs.
"That's our focus for the donated goods," Thomas continued. "Those of us who are parents can understand just how much is needed to just to keep a child well-looked after --formula, diapers, clean clothes, medical needs... it's just overwhelming."
Tickets are $10 in advancxe, $12 at the door.
